A MAN

His childhood was hard
His youth no better
He'd seen so many friends
Pass onto other worlds

He began to wonder
Was there any reason
That he should continue trying
When the winds of fate blew

Those who passed on
Had been so much stronger
Than he would ever be
So how would he defy the fates

The fates that blow
Grinding and crushing a man
Or knock him down
That he might rise again

The fates were kind
When a woman came
And said to him
Fear not the fates

Be strong and true
But bend with the wind
For failure its born of those
Who cannot bend

He walked always
Down to the sea to contemplate
Both what was said
And the mighty sea before him

So strong and powerful
Like the fates he fought
The sea took all before it
And crushed it on the beach

Even the mighty rock
Could not defy the sea for long
The beach was littered
With the wreckage of those that tried

A million grains of sand
Testify to the strength of the sea
For once they were mighty rocks
But today they litter the beach

Then he saw the lowly seaweed
It floats to and frow
As the mighty waves
Raced back and forth

The rock it stands
Strong and unbinding
The seaweed stands
But rolls with the waves

Then he saw
Man was much the same
Those who stand
And those who bend

A man who is to strong
And cannot bend
The fates must
Grind and crush this man

A man who stands his ground
Is strong and true
But will bend as he must
When the winds of fate blow

He is the one who survives
To do a job or rule a nation
To build or destroy
Not the unbending

Armed with this knowledge
A man must be strong and courageous
But bend in the winds of fate
He conquered his world.
