PROTOTYPICAL OPERATIONS ON THE
SIERRA WESTERN & SANTA FE

PART III

Pictured here are images taken from our first operating session held on April 4, 1998.

Engineer Ron (middle) and conductor Mark pull their second train of the session out of the lower staging yard. Conductor Rick (front) and engineer Phil (right) are still at it in Sambone. Sam (center) is railfanning. Switching a town is a time consuming activity - but the time goes by fast! Gary kept busy handling all the classification chores in Orchard Yard in Chico. Most through trains were re-blocked here and all locals originated and terminated here.

Engineer Ray pull his train, the Sierra Fruit Express, into the lower level Valley Staging Yard at the end of his run. This is where the layout's second level (above the staging yard) begins - it is still under construction. A cut of mechanical reefers on engineer Ray's Sierra Fruit Express as it enters Valley Staging. Trains staged in Valley Staging Yard. The steam engine on the right is stored here and was not used in this session. It is intended for 'Railfan' excursions only.

Another view of the trains in Valley Staging Yard. A new, just out of the shops mechanical reefer being spotted at a Los Molinos packing plant. Looking towards Chico's Orchard Yard from the Chico Wye tower. At the top of the picture, from left to right are: tracks 1 & 2 - mainline; tracks 3 through 6 - arrival / departure yard; tracks 7 through 14 - upper and lower classification yards.

The Valley Super C leaving Chico going north towards the end of the line at Portland, Oregon. Del Norte Canning is one of the bigger shippers on the layout (the building in the background is still under construction) The north end staging yard is a temporary and portable 4-track yard we call the "Aircraft Carrier". It will be relocated further down the mainline several times as construction on the layout progresses.
